Thriving in the Digital Age: How Intentional Solitude & Mindfulness Can Help You Be More Effective & Resilient

IMG_1706 (1).JPG

“Invisibly, almost without notice, we are losing ourselves. We are losing our ability to know who we are and what is important to us. We are creating a global machine in which each of us is a mindless and reflexive cog, relentlessly driven by the speed, noise, and artificial urgency of the wired world.” - Alan Lightman

A world that is increasingly noisy, interconnected and complex calls for new ways of being and working. With the omnipresence of smartphones, the constant stream of messages, and noise within and without, we are more distracted and inundated with the thoughts, expectations, and demands of others than ever. Without intentionally creating space for tuning within, we can miss out on tapping into the intelligence of our own mind, heart and body to provide new creative insights and direction.

During this workshop, we will explore the power of mindfulness and intentional doses of solitude in supportive community and practices for cultivating mindful communication, resilience, and effectiveness in our work and life. We define solitude as intentionally being with yourself for periods of time free from the input of other minds (instant messages, emails, news, etc.). We can bring mindfulness and reflective practices into these periods of solitude. This can help us act and respond more intentionally rather than being in reactive mode.

Our time together will be filled with practicing mindfulness, self-reflection, deep listening, generous questions, individual and small group activities, and time in solitude. We will explore personal and interpersonal practices and tools and design concrete ways to integrate mindfulness and doses of intentional solitude into our work and life.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore the connection between intentional solitude and mindfulness and being effective and resilient in the digital age;

  • Connect authentically and support each other in fostering quiet competencies and skills (i.e. mindful communication, creativity, (self)-compassion, inner clarity, deep work, digital wellness, discernment, emotional intelligence, moral courage) to be more effective and resilient;

  • Explore simple personal and interpersonal tools and practices that you can apply immediately;

  • Identify and commit to 1-3 actions or practices to integrate your learnings into your life.

“In ancient times having power meant having access to data. Today having power means knowing what to ignore.” - Yuval Noah Harari

A world that is increasingly noisy, interconnected and complex calls for new ways of leading. In this session, participants will explore the connection between intentional doses of solitude and being an effective and resilient leader. We define solitude as intentionally being with yourself for periods of time free from the input of other minds (instant messages, emails, news, podcasts, social media, etc.). Solitude provides the space for leaders to cultivate inner clarity, creativity, moral courage, emotional balance, and deeper connection to self and others. It frees leaders to act and respond more intentionally rather than being in reactive mode. Our time together will be filled with exploring simple individual and interpersonal practices for integrating intentional solitude and mindfulness into our work and life so we can lead wisely amidst increasing uncertainty, complexity, and change.

  • Explore individual and interpersonal practices and tools to embed intentional doses of solitude, mindfulness, and reflection into your work and life;
